Sharon bags sh26m from Big Brother

A mixture of ululations and boos! That’s what tore through the air Sunday evening at Sasani Studios in Johannesburg, South Africa; when Nigeria’s Karen Igho and Zimbabwe’s Wendall Parsons were announced winners of sh520m each – the grand prize of this year’s televised reality show, Big Brother Africa Amplified.

The finale’s studio filled to the rafters – fans of the show who won complimentary tickets to attend the finale, as well as friends and family members of the 26 contestants this year presented us.

Their ululations celebrated 27-year-old Karen for the fully-fledged entertainment her in-your-face personality gave Africa over her 91-day stay on the show, while the booing disregarded Wendall’s win, for he was the most boring of the seven finalists, with nothing worth writing home about.

“Karen deserved her win, but Wendall has robbed us of the money. What the hell was Africa thinking?” Exclaimed a fan who only identified himself as Gbedema.

While shrill celebratory voices tore through the air at the simultaneous announcement of the victors by show host IK Osakioduwa, others, mainly South Africans, chanted; “No way, no way, no way…”

They had hoped their drama ‘queen’ contestant Luclay, who came third, would win instead.

But Africa had decided. Karen, who before Big Brother was jobless, is now a millionaire having won six country votes of the participant 14 countries and a 15th, which comes from all the other countries not represented on the show.

She won block votes from Ghana, Angola, Tanzania, Nigeria, Mozambique and the rest of Africa. This win is guaranteed to turn her life around.

Our Sharon Salmon Nalukenge, who made 4th, placing Uganda’s best performance in the reality show’s six seasons, got only the Ugandan vote, with Kenya and Tanzania not showing any love for their East African Community member.

But her father Joe Salmon, a travel agent; and mother, Bank of Uganda’s Rebecca Sebuyira; were there to console our girl who, by making it to the finale, gets sh26m.

At a press conference later after the finale, Karen mentioned of how she lost her father to HIV/AIDS, and promised to use her prize money to fix the lack that his father’s departure left behind.
