Zeus meets afro-Jazz

Young musician Genius Senyatso seems to be following in his father’s footsteps. Genius is the son of the late folk music legend, Duncan Senyatso, who used to share the stage with his son where he would introduce him to the crowd.
One of the shows at which the father and son shared the stage was at the once popular Tlokweng Beer Garden some years ago. The show also featured Lesotho Afro jazz artist, Bhudaza who was recently in the country.

Last Friday, Genius staged a gig at Club Catch Jazz 22 where he showed patrons that he has some of his father’s magic in him. He demonstrated that he has what it takes. Genius’ backing band was equally capable.
Some of the patrons who attended the show were fellow artists such as Punah Gabasiane, Kearoma Rantao, Nono Siile and Nnunu Ramagotsi.
Just like the rest of the audience, the local luminaries were amazed by the young man’s talent. Flamboyant Maun businessman and promoter, Tops Masole was also in the house.
Genius opened his act around 9.00 pm but then there were only a few revellers. However, the entertainment facility was to be filled up around mid night.
Genius belted out tracks from his forthcoming album. One of the popular songs with the audience was entitled, Morena Re A Go Bitsa. There was another song that he dished out, which is dedicated to his late father.
Guest artist Zeus of the Big Brother Africa Amplified (BBAA) fame demonstrated once more why most fans love him.
Although he was performing in a rather unfamiliar territory and crowd, Zeus did a splendid job. He also did a duet with Genius. Who said you can’t rap traditional music? This is exactly what Zeus was doing. As for Genius, he fuses his music with poetry.
Just like his late father, Genius likes to share a song. He invited other local musicians like Kearoma, Punah and Nnunu to join him on the stage and rendered the late South African songbird, Miriam Makeba’s songs.
Genius also delved into his father’s songs. On the night Genius seemed determined to show that he is his father’s son, as he belted out tune after tune by the departed legend.
After the live performance, Soares Katumbela, aka DJ SK, took over. There is no doubt that DJ SK, who has vast experience in showbiz, is one of the most accomplished jazzmen around.
After such a wonderful performance, DJ SK did not disappoint the revellers as he dished out tracks by South African jazz artists.
He also played the ’80s’ beats that are popularly referred to as ‘the oldies’ much to the delight of everyone.
