Wendall appointed blood ambassador

Big Brother Africa winner Wendall Parson has encouraged youths and other members of the public to donate blood this festive season, and in future, to help improve blood bank supplies.
Wendall was appointed National Blood Service Zimbabwe (NBSZ) ambassador at a cocktail and Christmas Campaign launch held at a Harare hotel recently.
Parson said he appreciated the importance of donating blood when his friends were involved in an accident in the past.

Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe acting managing director Clifford Gobo announced his organisation will this festive season partner with NBSZ in its campaign.
The council will have teams at roadblocks distributing road safety information and encouraging people to donate blood.
“In Zimbabwe, there is a traffic collision every 15 minutes. An average of 45 people are injured per day and an average of five people are killed per day,” Gobo said.
“Friday nights, Saturdays and the festive seasons are the worst times.
“Over 55% of road crash deaths affect the 26-46 year age group, the most virile and productive age group for any nation. Road accidents cost over $400 million annually.”
Various other organisations including the National Tyre Services, Red Cross, Dg Signs, the police, emergence services and donors have partnered the NBSZ.
NBSZ chief executive David Mvere said his organisation hopes many donors would come forward so they can reduce the cost of blood in the long run.
Only four in 1 000 Zimbabweans donate blood compared to the World Health Organisation recommended ratio of 10:1 000 and this has led to those needing transfusion paying heavily for the service.
