‘Big Brother’ Winner Uti, Gushes Over Award, Says ‘It Will Spur Me’

The winner of big brother all stars 2010 edition, Uti Charles Nwachukwu was, on Thursday, September 29, 2011, crowned the LEADERSHIP young Person Of The Year (2010) at the just concluded leadership conference and awards held at the prestigious Ladi Kwali Hall, Sheraton Hotel, Abuja.

The highly appreciative Uti, who looked good in his well sewn suite, was humble, and despite the delay in flight, he made it to the ceremony.

Expressing his joy after receiving the award, he was full of smiles when LEADERSHIP reporters surrounded him.

“I can not express how I feel receiving this award. It shows that the efforts of the youths in the country are now recognised. LEADERSHIP is in the fore front and we will continue to appreciate that.”

Born on August 3, 1982 and the youngest in a family of six, Uti was raised in Ughelli and Sapele in Delta State, Nigeria. He attended the Igbinedion Education Centre from 1993 to 1999, where he made the social prefect in both the junior and senior secondary schools, thanks to his popularity and focus.

He began his tertiary education at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where he received a diploma in computer science and education before heading to the Benson Idahosa University Benin City, where he bagged a degree in computer science and education while shuffling in and out of Lagos to join his siblings and pursue a career in the entertainment industry.

Along the line, he became a regular in music videos, modelling in billboard adverts and getting his first acting break, as a contestant in ‘The Next Movie Star’ reality TV contest in which he was the first runner-up which led to him getting parts in a few small-screen productions.

It was also during his time at the university that Uti landed a much coveted place in the ‘Big Brother 3′ House,a happenstance that has brought him to where he is today. Despite his ‘Big Brother’ status and the regular work he was getting, Uti still managed to graduate top of his Class in 2009 with a 3.9 GPA, much to the suprise of his peers. There was more.

Despite not winning ‘Big Brother 3′, he was still on target,as doors of opportunity opened all over Africa. After ‘Big Brother 3′, Uti starred in two blockbuster movies ‘Fear Not’ and ‘Bursting out.’

2010 was his break-out year. He landed the role of controversial character ‘Marcus’ on M-NET’s ‘Tinsel Season 3′. He also also released his debut musical single, ‘Go Down’ to a suprised Nigerian audience in 2010. Now, he is a programme anchor for ‘Jara’ on M-NET, and has also acted in six movies after leaving the ‘Big Brother Allstars’ House.

“This is not the first time I am receiving an award of this calibre. I am also happy to be part of the gathering of the who-is-who in Nigeria.

“This is the third time I am being appreciated since I left the ‘big brother’ house. The first was from my governor, Emmanuel Uduaghan; the other came from Liyel Imoke. Now LEADERSHIP has recognised me. I am so happy to be appreciated.

The celebrity has also floated a charity organisation for street children.
“My charity foundation for under-privileged children called Street Gents, mean to educate street children, mentor them and help them to build a better future for themselves through sports academies, stage school and scholarships.

“My dad died of cancer, that is why I want to do all I can to help the down-trodden. We need support from different angles, government agencies and corporate individuals to come give their support to the foundation.”

As for the award, ‘This is a great addition to my person. It will motivate a lot of youths who will see that hard work pays.”

Uti was also happy that things have looked up in the entertainment industry, as things are no longer the way they once were.

“You know, we have gone far from where we were. There are a lot of changes in the entertainment world and this is one of the reasons why I am being honoured today. I am humbled and will continue to appreciate it. We have greatly improved,” he said.
